About TaxByCity
TaxByCity answers one question for any U.S. county or ZIP code: what will I actually pay in taxes? Property tax, income tax, and sales tax — brought together in one place, so you can see the full picture instead of hunting across a dozen state and federal sites.
What this site is
Most tax tools show you a single number with no explanation. TaxByCity is built differently. Every figure on every page carries two things: the named source it came from, and its "as of" date. If a number came from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey, you'll see that. If it came from the Tax Foundation's state tax tables, you'll see that too. You shouldn't have to trust us — you should be able to trace every number back to where it came from.
What we cover
- Property tax — state, county, and ZIP-level effective rates (what owners actually pay as a share of home value), covering all ~3,200 U.S. counties.
- Sales tax — state and combined local rates, resolved to specific ZIP codes.
- Income tax — state brackets, federal brackets, standard deductions, FICA, and a take-home-pay calculator that applies real graduated brackets rather than a flat top rate.
- Federal context — the brackets and deductions that connect "what do I earn" to "what do I actually keep."
Who runs this
TaxByCity is maintained by Jarrod Gravison, Data Editor. The data layer — the sources, the merge logic, the calculators, and the annual review cadence — is built and kept current by one person accountable for getting it right. Contributors and datasets are credited in the methodology. This is an independent reference site; it is not affiliated with the IRS, the Census Bureau, or any state revenue department.
How it's funded
TaxByCity is reader-supported. Where you see affiliate links (for example, to tax-preparation software) or advertising, they are clearly disclosed. Our editorial choices about the data are made independently of that funding — a number is shown because a source reports it, not because anyone asked us to show it.
